Two cattle traders, including two cows, were killed and one seriously injured when a train hit them while crossing an illegally constructed uncontrolled railway crossing at Abhaynagar in Jessore.
The accident took place at around 10 am on Sunday, July 18 in the mile post area of Jafarpur village in Rajghat upazila, sources said.
The deceased were identified as Shahid Sheikh, 55, son of late Nowsher Ali of Padmapukur area of Payra union and Mofiz, 40, son of late Yusuf Ali of Samashpur village in the same union. Besides, Russell, 30, son of Sabur Gazi of Barandi village of the same union, has been admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital with serious injuries.
Witnesses said three cattle traders, including three cows, were crossing the rail crossing in the milepost area in an almsadhu at around 10 am. Meanwhile, two cows died on the spot when the Jessore-bound Rupsha Express train hit them. Alamsadhu was torn to pieces. With the help of locals, three people including the driver of Alamsadhur were rescued and admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.
Shahinur Rahman, a doctor at the emergency department of the Upazila Health Complex, said the injured were referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Two died at noon while undergoing treatment there. The condition of one of the injured is critical.
Nawapara Railway Station Master Bulbul Ahmed said the spot was inspected after the accident. Two dead cows and a twisted alamsadhu were found. The matter has been reported to Khulna Railway. The crossing at the accident site is not a railway designated crossing. The crossing was completely unprotected as it was an illegal rail crossing. That is why such a tragic accident happened.
