One teenager and another person were injured in a clash between two teenagers of two families at Tahirpur in Sunamganj.
Hundreds of people from both the families took up position in Badaghat Bazar of the upazila on Wednesday night to prepare for the clash.
Tahirpur police OC said on Thursday. Abdul Latif Tarafdar said hundreds of people preparing to clash between the two families were forced to leave the market on Wednesday night when police fired blank shots from nine rounds of shotgun to control the situation.
He added that additional polish has been deployed and the police will provide security if the shops are opened.
Earlier, the incident took place at Badaghat Bazar in the upazila around 8pm on Wednesday.
Witnesses said Morsalin, a teenage son of Nanu Miah of Pailanpur village in the upazila, was beaten by Al Amin, son of Haji Abdur Noor of Sohala village, and his cousin Shant at Badaghat Bazar around 8pm on Wednesday.
After receiving the news, Morsalin’s family members attacked Shantar’s father Abdul Hakim of Sohala village and injured him.
In the aftermath of the incident, hundreds of people from both the families started rioting in the market with sticks of Sota da Ramda.
That night, the traders quickly closed their shops for fear of vandalizing about a thousand shops in the market. The commercial center of Badaghat became depopulated.
Among the injured, Abdul Hekim, son of late Haji Jalal Uddin of Sohala village of the upazila was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition and Morsali, son of Nanu Mia of Pailanpur village of the upazila was admitted to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital on Wednesday night.
Haji Abdur Noor (Retd. Army member) of Sohala village of the upazila said on Thursday, “My son Al Amin and nephew Shant were called to Badaghat Bazaar on Morsalin mobile phone due to a previous dispute and then they were attacked.”
Nanu Mia of Pailanpur village in the upazila said on Thursday, “My son Shant and Al Amin of Sohala beat him severely when he went to eat the hotpot in the market to settle the dispute.”
Meanwhile, Tahirpur Police Station (Circle) SSP said. Babul Akhtar, OC of the police station, brought additional police from the police station and members of the Badaghat police outpost and forced the people of the two families, who were preparing for the clash at night, to leave the market.
