Md. Aminur Rahman, Jessore:
Shyamal Kumar, Upazila LGED officer, has recently demolished some parts of the bridge at the entrance of Magura Bazar in Prembagh Union, accusing him of constructing a bridge with substandard equipment without informing the Abhaynagar Upazila LGED office in Jessore.
It is learned that in the middle of 2019, a contractor named Jakaullah received a tender for the construction of the bridge at the entrance of Magura Bazar on the main road from Prembagh in Abhaynagar to Monirampur.
When the main structure of the bridge was erected last month, it was opened to the public and small vehicles, and the rest of the work on the bridge continued. But last week, Abhaynagar Upazila LGED officer Shyamal Kumar visited the bridge in person and at one stage he ordered to demolish some parts of the bridge and immediately stopped the ongoing work by demolishing some parts of the railing of the bridge.
Asked why the bridge was partially demolished, he said, “Contractor Zakaullah was constructing the bridge with substandard equipment without informing the Upazila LGED department, which is why some parts of the
bridge have been demolished and the rest will be decided after inspection.”
Asked about the next steps against the contractor, he said, “As per the official rules, the matter has been informed to the concerned higher authorities as well as the concerned contractor through a letter. However, all the construction work of the bridge will be suspended till further orders.
Asked about the bridge to Prembagh Union Parishad chairman Mohammad Mofiz Uddin, he admitted the matter, saying the LGED official had demolished the bridge in person and suspended the ongoing work. According to the locals, the materials used in the construction of the bridge are of low quality.
Concerned quarters expressed the view that the locals would benefit if the bridge was constructed through proper investigation and proper inspection.
Abhaynagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Aminur Rahman Khan said, I have been informed about the matter. Due to the use of low quality materials, some parts of the bridge have been demolished and work has been suspended.
