Customs Excise VAT Circle officials have seized tea worth around Tk 21 lakh for transporting tea in Panchagarh without paying VAT. A truck used for transporting tea was also seized. The seized tea and truck are in the custody of Panchagarh Sadar Police.
The tea was seized from a tea factory called ‘Al Amin Tea House’ in Khalpara of Jagdal area of Sadar upazila on Tuesday (June 15).
Customs officials said a sealed truck of tea was to be sent to Chittagong for auction at the request of Uttara Green Tea. But instead of sending them there, they secretly tried to unload 200 sacks of tea from the truck at Al Amin Tea House. At that time, they seized the truck on the basis of secret information. During the operation, the local influential people blocked them for about three hours in two phases.
Revenue Officer Shahjahan Miah said a general diary has been kept at the Sadar police station. Further action will be taken on the instructions of the Divisional Commissioner of Customs.
Panchagarh Sadar Police Station OC Abu Akkach Ahmed said that on Tuesday (June 15) night, a truck loaded with tea went to seize a truck in Jagdal area. The truck is in the custody of Sadar police. Action will be taken as per VAT law.
