Police have recovered four rare species of woodpeckers from the Sundarbans village of Sharankhola in Bagerhat. On Thursday (April 1) morning, a police patrol team recovered the four woodpeckers in an abandoned plastic basket from the road in Khuriakhali village of the upazila.

Police said Tafalbari outpost in-charge Harun Aur Rashid was patrolling the area. During the patrol, they saw a plastic basket lying on the road next to Anwar Bayati’s house in the village around 4 am. At that time he recovered the basket and found 4 woodpeckers in it.

Sharankhola police officer in charge (OC) said. Saidur Rahman said that while the woodpeckers were being trafficked from the Sundarbans, the smugglers are believed to have fled after seeing the police. The forest department has been informed to release four woodpeckers in the Sundarbans. A GD has been lodged with the police station in this regard.

East Sundarbans Sharankhola Station Officer (SO) said. Abdul Manna said the chakra rescued by the police operation was released in the forest around 4 pm.
