SPORT | Uganda Cranes skipper Denis Onyango left the pitch injured on Saturday as his South African club Mamelodi Sundowns drew one-all with Bidvest Wits.
Onyango had to be substituted with Reyaad Pieterse on 74 minutes following a collision.
The extent of the injury remains unknown and Cranes technical team will be waiting anxiously to find out the goalkeeper’s fate with 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final group games barely four weeks away.
Uganda top Group L and have already qualified for the championship due in the summer in Egypt, but with a clean record after five rounds of matches against Lesotho, Cape Verde and Tanzania, the Cranes are hoping to complete the qualifier without conceding a goal.
Onyango, the African Goalkeeper of the Year, is crucial in keeping that dream alive when Uganda visit Tanzania for the penultimate group fixture.
Bidvest Wits and ten-man Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 1-1 draw in the Absa Premiership’s top-of-the-table clash on Saturday evening.
The Brazilians remain in second on the log but two games in hand, including Wednesday’s clash against the season’s wonder package in Cape Town City.
