POLITICS | Former Army Commander Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu’s new Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party has received the graces of Uganda Police Force to ahead of planned launch activities.

In a statement, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said territorial police at Kampala Metropolitan Headquarters was working with ANT organisers’ meeting on May 21 at Nsambya and thereafter launch the Alliance for National Transformation as a political party on May 22,” he said.

Muntu, who quit the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) last year alongside some of the party leaders to form his own organisation, received a certificate from the Electoral Commission last month.

The former FDC president has always adopted a moderate stance as opposed to the hard line one taken by a section of his former party, leading to a fallout and his eventual departure.

However, where most political parties would have to fight for space to even breath, Muntu appears to have gained the graces of the regime ahead of his planned political activities and will not be subjected to the baptism of teagas and arrests like it is with the rest of the parties.

Enanga said Muntu had sought permission and asked for Police help in policing his party activities.

He said Police and ANT held consultations on how best to effectively manage the two events and ensure a proportionate policing response.

“We want to welcome and assure the intending participants that their safety at both events is guaranteed,” Enanga said.

“We would also like to praise the efforts of the organisers for their peaceful engagement, towards addressing, their outstanding political issues, in a sincere, mature and sustained manner.”
