Makerere University Business School(MUBS), Nakawa students on Tuesday held a peaceful demonstration at the school campus protesting against Prof. Venancious Baryamureeba.
President Museveni last month trashed an earlier directive by the Minister of Education and Sports, also his wife and First Lady Janet Museveni in which she had asked MUBS to sack Prof. Wasswa Balunywa and replace him with Prof.Baryamureeba.
Ms Museveni had earlier written to the Education Service Commission to speed up the process of getting a replacement for Prof.Waswa Balunywa as the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) principal.
On Tuesday, a group of the university students carrying placards demonstrated at main building insisting that the former presidential candidate should pack his belongings and the institution.
“His reputation is tainted wherever he has been and we cannot allow him as the head of our great school,” said Ronald Ngobi, the MUBS guild prime minister.
The students accused Baryamureeba, who is the chairperson university council of being a wolf in sheep’s skin when he allegedly worked behind the scenes to ensure the downfall of Prof.Balunywa.
They also appreciate Museveni for ensuring sanity returns at MUBS by re-appointing Prof.Balunywa to head the institution of higher learning.
Meanwhile, we have learnt that both Balunywa and Baryamureeba, the university council were on Tuesday involved in a crisis meeting, attended by among others state minister for Veteran Affairs, Dr.Bright Rwamirama.
This website was however not able to ascertain what was discussed during the meetings.
On April,11, the First Lady wrote to the Education Service Commission asking them to speed up the process of getting a replacement for Prof.Waswa Balunywa as the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) principal whose tenure was to expire later on May 28.
In the letter, Mrs.Museveni quoted section 83 of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 that provides that a principal of a public tertiary institution shall be appointed by the Education Service Commission on terms and conditions that it may determine.
“The purpose of this letter is to inform you that you advertise this post of Principal of MUBS as soon as you receive a formal submission from the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education and Sports,”reads in part the letter by Mrs.Museveni.
“The Permanent Secretary will make a formal submission on the job specifications, duties and age requirement for the post of a principal MUBS.”
The Education Minister also asked the Education Service Commission to ensure they finalise the process of appointment of the next MUBS principal before Prof.Balunywa’s contract expires to ‘’avoid a leadership vacuum’’ at MUBS.
However, Museveni quashed the directive, before issuing a fresh one ordering for the immediate re-appointment of Balunywa.
According to a May 28, 2018, the president noted that Balunywa has always been on the liberation side ideology in addition to being an active administrator.
“His institution has been free of strikes. I have never found him averse to advise the times I have interacted with him,” Museveni argued.
“I am writing to direct you to re-appoint Professor Wasswa Balunywa as the Principle of MUBS for another term on the expiry of this one. One of the obstacles that have wasted our time is a disoriented pro-imperialism academia.”
