MBARARA | A man nabbed skinning dogs has told Police in Mbarara District that he has been supplying butcheries for several years.

Sadru Mustafa, who identified himself as a Congolese, was nabbed by residents in Quarters Cell, Kakoba Ward in Mbarara municipality on Friday as he skinned the canines for Easter Weekend supply.

“I have been doing this business for so long for my earning,” Mustafa told Police after his arrest.

“I earn Shs30,000 for every dog I slaughter and supply to butchers, who mix them with other meat for sale.”

Locals who caught the suspect in the act had attempted to lynch him but others intervened and had him handed over to Police for interrogation.

He later led Police and authorities to butcheries where he supplies dog meat regularly and was due to supply for the Easter weekend.

It is not the first time such incidents are being reported. Over the years, several cases of people caught dog or monkey meat have been documented, except that the previous cases involved supply of the meat to roadside roasted meat vendors (nyama choma).

However, the new development will open debate on the nature of meat butcheries are selling to unsuspecting consumers as they seek to make more profit.

The revelation that meat sold at butcheries could be mixed up with dog meat comes after last year’s scandal when it was revealed that most butcheries used formalin, a chemical used for preserving dead bodies, to keep meat fresh.
