Police say Jane Frances Nampijja, a second year ICT student, faked her kidnap to extort from relatives to finance her lifestyle

CRIME | A Makerere University student who disappeared from home and later claimed kidnap has been found in a hostel “chilling,” Police said Tuesday.

Jane Frances Nampijja, a second year Information and Communication Technology student, had asked for Shs5 million claiming her kidnappers would kill her if the money was not delivered.

She wanted the money to use for outings with friends, Police said after arresting the 23-year-old resident of Nsumbi, Kyebando Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.

Nampijja allegedly disappeared from home on Saturday and sent messages to friends using her phone, claiming that she was in the hands of kidnappers and that they were demanding a ransom.

“Her relatives immediately reported the matter at Nansana Police Station vide SD REF: 73/25/08/2018. Police in Nansana followed intelligence leads, located and found her at Mark Cottages where she had rented a room,” Kampala Metropolitan Police said.

The suspect has been arrested and is currently detained at Nansana Police Station.

Sources who know Nampijja say it is not the first time she is pulling stunts for money and that the Makerere University Police is also investigating her for a previous fraud-related conduct.

However, Crime24 could not readily verify the authenticity of this information while efforts to contact Makerere University publicist Ritah Namisango on her known mobile telephone were futile at the time of publishing this.
