ACCIDENT | At least three children and one motorcyclist were killed on the spot on Masaka-Mbarara Highway on Sunday afternoon when a speeding vehicle veered off the road and crushed them.
Police said the accident occurred at Mbiriizi town when the driver of a Toyota Allex registration number UBA 995R lost control and knocked a motorcycle registration number UEG 115A as well as two other persons.
“The vehicle was coming from Kampala and heading to Mbarara but the driver was speeding, leading to loss of control,” said deputy police spokesperson Patrick Onyango.
Police have since identified the dead children as Iga Kawusa, 10, son of Haruna Matovu of Ndegeya Lwengo District, Geoffrey Bazeketa, 11, son of Herman Sekandwa of Ddegeya, also from Lwengo, and Emmanuel Biragire, 18, son of Badru Kankaka of Kabarungi in Lwengo.
The motorcyclist has been identified as Eddie Baguma, 30, from Bwami, Lwengo.
Bodies have been taken to Masaka Hospital mortuary.
Onyango said the occupants of the car escaped unhurt but the driver, Eddie Otwiine, sustained serious injuries.
Otwiine, 71, is a resident of Kyanja in Kampala and has since been referred to Mbarara Hospital.
He cautioned motorists against speeding, especially during the festive season when many are making the mad dash to their ancestral homes to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.
The western axis Masaka Road is one of the busiest this time of the year as many city dwellers from parts of Buganda and western Uganda return home for the festive season.
